Arizona Takes Down UTEP in Four Sets

EL PASO, Texas – The Wildcats improved to 5-6 on the season with a four-set victory (25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 26-24) over UTEP on Tuesday night in El Paso.
Arizona had four attackers with 10 or more kills and the defense totaled seven blocks to outlast UTEP. Carlie Cisneros led the offense with a season high 15 kills with a .387 hitting percentage and also tallied 14 digs. Renee Jones, Kennedy Osunsanmi, and Destiny Ndam-Simpson all tallied 10 kills to bolster the offense. Five Wildcats had two blocks each.
Arizona won the first set, 25-20. The Wildcats hit .394 as a team and Cisneros led the attack with five kills and a .714 clip. Jones added four kills and a block for Arizona. The Cats used an early 4-0 run to create separation from the Miners and continued to string runs together. UTEP tried to make a late comeback but a kill from Osunsanmi ended the set.
The Cats took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 win in the second set. Arizona and UTEP kept the set close with neither team leading by more than three points at any time until the Cats went on a 3-0 run to end the set. Jones, Osunsanmi, and Ndam-Simpson all had four kills in the set to lead Arizona.
UTEP extended the match with a 25-19 win in set three. The Miners took advantage of a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to take a large lead over the Cats and win the set. Cisneros had four kills in the third set but UTEP out-hit Arizona.
Arizona won the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set. UTEP held the lead for the first half of the set until Arizona used a 5-0 run to take the lead at 20-19. The teams traded points until the Cats won the final two points to secure the match victory. Ndam-Simpson led the way with five kills while Cisneros and Osunsanmi followed with four kills each.
The Wildcats will begin Big 12 action at Colorado on Sunday, September 27 at 12 p.m. MST in Boulder, Colorado.
