Cats Fall in Five to No. 21 Buffaloes

BOULDER, Colo. – Arizona dropped a five-set match (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 6-15) to No. 21 Colorado on Sunday afternoon to open Big 12 play.
The Wildcats had seven blocks, served eight aces, and had three players with 10 or more kills in the match. Carlie Cisneros tallied a season high 18 kills to lead the offense and also served four aces. Destiny Ndam-Simpson followed with 16 kills and Kennedy Osunsanmi had 13 kills. Defensively, Renee Jones led the Cats with four blocks while Journey Tucker and Marina Vosloo had three blocks each.
The Buffaloes won the first set 25-20. Arizona served three aces in the set but Colorado hit .303 as a team to take the opening set. Ndam-Simpson led the Wildcats with five kills and a .500 clip. Osunsanmi added two kills and a block for the Cats.
The Cats evened the match in the second set with a 25-20 win. Arizona was up by as many as eight points to keep the lead in the set. Cisneros knocked down six kills and hit .500 to lead the way in the second set. Ndam-Simpson added four kills while Jones and Tucker had two kills each.
Arizona won the third set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to open the set and held the lead the rest of the way. Arizona used two blocks to hold Colorado to a .125 hitting percentage. Cisneros totaled five kills while Osunsanmi and Marina Vosloo add three kills apiece for the offense.
Colorado won the fourth set 25-22 to force a fifth set. Arizona started on a 5-0 run for the second straight set but Colorado used a few runs to take the lead. Both teams hit over .300 in the set but the Buffs served five aces to overpower the Cats. Ndam-Simpson and Osunsanmi both had six kills to lead the offense. Cisneros added three kills but it wasn't enough to win the set.
The Buffs won the fifth set 15-6 to win the match. Colorado hit .579 as a team and limited Arizona to a .176 hitting percentage in the set. Cisneros had three kills and hit .375 but the Buffs jumped out to an early lead that Arizona couldn't catch.
Arizona returns home for the first time in a month to host Iowa State on Friday, October 2 at 6 p.m. MST in McKale Center at ALKEME Arena.
