Carlos Villarreal Takes Second at NCAA West Regional
11/09/2018 | Cross Country
Sacramento, Calif. – The University of Arizona cross country program sent eight athletes to compete in the NCAA West Regional on Friday, Nov. 9th. Leading the Cats were Carlos Villarreal and Addi Zerrenner who both finished in the top 20 individually.
"I thought that most of our athletes had a great performance," said cross country coach James Li. "We are here, not really having a full team but we stress the fact that the individuals coming here achieve an individual goal. Addi (Zerrenner) was 17th on the women's side and Jennie (Baragar-Petrash) was 25th. They are NCAA All-Region performers. Keelah (Barger) ran a great race. I thought she did a really great job finishing her freshman year. Hannah (Whetzel) ran a pretty good race to finish her senior year. On the men's side, it was someone unexpected. Carlos (Villarreal) ran a great race and finished second. He was the No. 1 individual in the region. This was his best race to this point, especially a 10K being a 1500-meter runner. That was a great run for him. Our freshman Connor McCabe ran a great race. Overall, it was a very positive day."
Villarreal finished second in the 10K race with a time of 29:43.40 for his third top-three finish of the year. Zerrenner finished the 6K contest 17th with a time of 20:08.29 for her fourth top-20 finish in her senior season. Jennie Baragar-Petrash closed out the race with a time of 20:22.8 to finish 25th. The trio will be named to the NCAA West Al-Region Team and wait for the NCAA announcement on Saturday, Nov 10th at 3 p.m. MST.
Keelah Barger ran a time of 22:04.1 for a PR in the 6K. The freshman finished 137th. Hannah Whetzel ran a season's best 22:20.2 in the 6K race to finish 152nd.
Seamus White clocked a time of 31:09.8 to finish 82nd. Freshman Connor McCabe finished in 90th-place with a time of 31:24.3. Freshman Shem Kemboi finished the meeting with a time of 32:43.4 to take 126th.
