Chypyha Advances to Invitational Quarterfinals at Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. – Freshman Devin Chypyha led the way for the Wildcats, going a perfect 2-0 on the first day of 2015 Pac-12 Championship play, Thursday out at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club in Ojai, Calif.
“I was pleased with our singles today,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We fought hard and earned our wins. While this tournament means little in terms of team competition, it has been nice to see our girls step up here.”
Chypyha (17-12) was victorious against Arizona State's Alexandra Osborne, as she won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32 in the invitational bracket. The freshman then took down Utah's Elene Najera-Salas in the round of 16 in dominating fashion, 7-5, 6-1. With the two wins, Chypyha advanced to Friday's quarterfinals where she will face No. 96 Kaitlin Ray of UCLA tomorrow at noon PT.
Sophomore and 62nd-ranked Lauren Marker (22-9) got off to a good start, as she defeated Washington's Capucine Gregoire 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in round of 32 action in the championship bracket. However, she eventually fell to No. 51 Jennifer Brady of UCLA in the round of 16 in a thrilling 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 affair.
Also in the championship bracket, No. 98 Briar Preston (17-9) was defeated by Washington's Elianne Douglas-Miron 7-5, 6-4 in her opening match.
Junior Inge Hendrikx (19-13) was defeated by No. 92 Karla Popovic of California in the round of 32 by a score of 6-1, 6-2 in the invitational bracket.
Doubles action also begins tomorrow where the Wildcats will be represented by two doubles teams. No. 27 Preston/Austin (12-6) will square off against USC's Gabby Smith/Madison Westby at 10:15 a.m. PT in the championship bracket. Oldham/Chypyha (10-7) will also compete against Osborne/Leighann Sahagun of Arizona State in the invitational bracket at 9 a.m. PT.
