Ostrzygalo Leads Wildcats at ITA Southwest Regionals

SAN DIEGO.- Martyna Ostrzygalo reached the singles round of 16 as Arizona women's tennis competed at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, advancing one round beyond the Wildcats' best singles finish at last year's event.
Ostrzygalo rallied past Sofia Cohen Perovani (LMU) 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2 on Friday before defeating #74 Hannah Read (USD) 6-3, 7-5. She fell to Ahmani Guichard (UCLA) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday. Ciara Moore also posted a comeback victory in the opening round, beating #16 Anastasiia Grechkina (PEPP) 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to Zlata Bartanusz (ASU) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the round of 32.
Two Arizona doubles pairs reached the round of 16. Zoya Chulak and Moore defeated Brady/Gee (UCI) 8-1 and Youri/Beard (UCSB) 8-5 before falling to Markov/Lugon (CSUF) 8-7 (7-2). Following a first-round bye, Ostrzygalo and Sophia Christodoulou edged Guru/Goldberg (UCSD) 8-7 (7-3), then lost to Marakhtanova/Rugara (UCLA) 8-3.
The Wildcats collected eight singles victories across Saturday's and Sunday's extra matches. Moore defeated Camilia Samel Druz (LMU) 6-1, 6-1 and Olivia Center (UCLA) 6-4, 6-0, while Chulak topped Makeilah Nepomuceno (UH) 7-5, 6-4 and Aniela Odrobina (GCU) 6-2, 6-4.
Christodoulou beat Rachel Gee (UCI) 4-6, 6-4, [10-7] and Grete Gull (UH) 6-4, 6-4. Sara Mlenska added a 6-4, 6-3 win over Melis Mert (LMU), and Stephanie Shogreen outlasted Simone Kay (USC) 6-4, 2-6, [11-9].
Arizona swept its three extra doubles matches Sunday. Christodoulou and Moore defeated Kay/Borruel (USC) 6-2, Ostrzygalo and Mlenska topped Nepomuceno/Galindo (UH) 6-2, and Shogreen and Chulak beat Arangio/Crossman (GCU) 6-4.
Josie Usereau and Ostrzygalo will next represent Arizona at TCU's Battle for the Boot invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
