Wildcats Use 13 Blocks to Reverse Sweep Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Arizona Volleyball improved to 4-6 with a reverse sweep of San Diego State on Friday night. Arizona lost the first two sets 16-25 and 19-25 before winning the final three sets 25-18, 25-19, 15-8 in San Diego.
The Wildcats totaled 13 blocks to hold the Aztecs to a .134 hitting percentage and served five aces to win the game. Renee Jones led Arizona's offense with 11 kills and a .375 clip with five blocks. Three other Cats – Kennedy Osunsanmi, Hayden Reeder, and Journey Tucker – all had eight kills while Tucker also tallied eight blocks.
The first set went to the Aztecs, 25-15. San Diego used a 4-0 run to take the lead after trading points with Arizona to open to set. Tucker knocked down four kills and hit .800 but SDSU used two blocks and a .395 team hitting percentage to win the first set of the match.
San Diego State won the second set, 25-19. The second set started with both teams using runs to go ahead but the Aztecs went on a pair of 4-0 runs to take a six-point lead and the Wildcats couldn't catch up. Jones had three kills and Tucker had two kills but the Aztecs out-hit the Wildcats for the second set in a row.
Arizona won the third set 25-18 to force a fourth set. The Wildcats found their block in the third set, totaling seven blocks to hold SDSU to a .042 clip. Tucker had five blocks and Reeder totaled three blocks and three kills to lead the Cats. Jones knocked down a pair of kills and tallied two blocks to help Arizona win the set.
The Wildcats evened the match and forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win in set four. Arizona was down by three early in the set but used multiple scoring runs to take the lead halfway through the set. SDSU out-blocked Arizona but the Wildcats held the Aztecs to a negative hitting percentage. Carlie Cisneros and Jones totaled three kills each and three other Wildcats had a pair of kills to help the offense.
Arizona completed the reverse sweep with a 15-8 win in the fifth set. Both teams traded points to open the set before Arizona went on a trio of 3-0 runs to close out the match. The Wildcats hit .368 and had three blocks to hold the Aztecs to a -.091 clip. Osunsanmi led the attack with three kills and a .400 hitting percentage while Jones and Reeder added two kills each for Arizona. Jones was also involved in all three blocks during the fifth set.
The Wildcats will head to UTEP on Tuesday, September 22 to take on the Miners at 5 p.m. MST in El Paso, Texas.
