
Arizona Shuts Out Houston for First Big 12 Win

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Soccer earned its first Big 12 victory of the season Thursday night, defeating Houston 1-0 at Mulcahy Stadium behind a second-half penalty kick from Lily Boydstun and a combined shutout from Sofia Cortes-Browne and Laurynn Ziller.
The Wildcats improved to 4-5-4 overall and 1-1-3 in conference play, while Houston fell to 7-3-3 and 3-2-0 in the Big 12.
Arizona controlled the attacking pressure early, outshooting Houston 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes. Mireya Stephenson led the first-half attack with three attempts, including one on goal, while Lainey Swanson added two shots. Jessica Bedolla also put an attempt on frame just before halftime, but Houston goalkeeper Sierra McCluer recorded three saves to keep the match scoreless.
The Wildcats held Houston without a shot on goal in the first half as Cortes-Browne kept the Cougars off the scoreboard through the opening 45 minutes.
The match remained scoreless deep into the second half before Houston earned a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Ziller came up with the save against Samira Minor to preserve the scoreless tie.
Less than three minutes later, Arizona earned a penalty kick of its own. Boydstun stepped up and converted in the 75th minute, putting the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
Houston continued to push for an equalizer, but Arizona's defense held firm through the closing minutes to secure the victory.
Arizona finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Cortes-Browne and Ziller split time in goal, with Cortes-Browne playing the opening 45 minutes and Ziller recording one save in the second half. The duo combined for Arizona's second shutout of the season.
The victory marked Arizona's first-ever win over Houston, evening the all-time series at 1-1.
