Aubert and Macaluso Led UA XC at Wisconsin Invite

Madison, Wisc. – The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday in Madison, Wisc. Aside from the NCAA Championships, this competition is widely considered the best in the country. Of the 38 men's teams and 40 women's teams that competed in the sixth-annual running of the meet, 22 of the women's teams were ranked and 19 of the men's teams were ranked. The UA women took 32nd place overall in the 6K while the men's squad earned a 32nd-place finish as well.
Senior Kristina Aubert has been the top finisher for the Wildcats in each race of the 2014 season. She earned a 65th-place finish on Friday with a time of 20:49 in the 6,000-meter race. Senior Stephanie Bulder took 146th place and clocked a time of 21:38. Senior Amanda Russell was just behind Bulder, taking 148th place and also posting a time of 21:38. Junior Molly Callahan's time of 21:46 was good for 166th place. Senior Kate Penney was the fifth and final scorer for the Wildcats, taking 207th place with a time of 22:10. Arizona also ran senior Clea Formaz (216th; 22:18) and senior Hanna Peterson (233rd; 22:32). Freshmen Claire Green and Kayla Ferron ran in the “B” race, also a 6K. Green took 28th place with a time of 21:49 while Ferron finished 38th overall at 22:01. Junior Daylee Burr ran that race as well and finished in 67th place with a time of 22:30.
The women's team took 32nd place with 710 points. Michigan State won with 87 points. Arkansas' 191 points were good for second place. Iowa State tallied 213 points in third place. Wisconsin posted 227 points in fourth place and the West Virginia Mountaineers finished in fifth place with 245 points.
On the men's side, senior Sam Macaluso was the top finisher for Arizona, posting a time of 24:35 in 94th place. Macaluso lost a shoe, forcing him to run the last 4K with only one shoe. Senior Kenji Bierig's time of 24:51 was good for 133rd place. Sophomore Collins Kibet posted a time of 24:52 and took 136th place. Freshman Bailey Roth had a time of 25:22 and finished in 196th place. Freshman Patrick Leary's time of 26:11 was good for 231st place. Sophomore Matthew Beer also ran for the Wildcats and clocked a time of 26:29 in 242nd place. In the men's “B” race, freshman Michael Godbout finished in 72nd place with a time of 26:44. Junior Dylan Hopper's time of 27:01 was good for 76th place overall.
The men tallied 760 points and finished in 32nd place. Syracuse won with 86 points, Iona had 154 in second place, Wisconsin took third place with 176 points, Portland had 211 points in fourth and Stanford finished with 220 points in fifth place.
“We have a lot of work to do,” head coach James LI said. “I believe our guys and girls are better than that. But, it doesn't do us any good if we don't get it done in competitions like this. We're just not getting it done and we have to do a better job. It was not a good race and it seemed like we were running scared.”
The Wildcats return to action on Oct. 23 for the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
