James Ewing enters his second season with Arizona Women’s Basketball in 2026-27 after being promoted to Associate Coach in May 2026. Ewing joined Head Coach Becky Burke’s inaugural Arizona staff in April 2025 and has worked alongside Burke since 2023.
During his first season in Tucson, Ewing played an integral role in player development, recruiting and scouting as Arizona established itself among the Big 12’s best in several statistical categories. The Wildcats ranked second in the conference in free throw percentage and third in steals, while four players recorded double-doubles during the season.
Noelani Cornfield earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors after averaging 14.4 points and 6.9 assists per game during the regular season. She ranked second in the Big 12 in both assists and steals per game and finished with 192 assists, the third-highest single-season total in program history. Sumayah Sugapong also emerged as one of the league’s top guards, leading the Big 12 in free throw percentage and averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 steals over the final seven conference games.
Prior to Arizona, Ewing spent two seasons on Burke’s staff at Buffalo. In 2024-25, he helped guide the Bulls to a program-record 30 wins and the WNIT Championship. Buffalo posted 19 wins, reached the MAC Championship game and earned a WNIT berth during his first season with the program in 2023-24.
Ewing joined Buffalo following a season at St. Bonaventure, where he served as assistant coach and director of basketball operations. He previously worked as an assistant coach at Daemen College, helping develop Katie Titus into a conference Player of the Year and First Team All-American while also leading the program’s recruiting efforts. He also spent the 2020-21 season at Bryant & Stratton College, helping the Bobcats to a runner-up finish in the USCAA.
A former Division I student-athlete, Ewing played two seasons at Toledo before finishing his collegiate career at Mercyhurst. As a senior, he led the team in rebounding and helped Mercyhurst earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business and hospitality from Mercyhurst in 2015.
Following college, Ewing played professionally with the Buffalo 716ers in the Premier Basketball League before spending three seasons in Belize’s National Elite Basketball League, where he earned three All-Star selections.
A Buffalo, New York, native, Ewing was a three-time First Team All-Catholic selection and First Team All-State honoree at Cardinal O’Hara High School before spending a postgraduate year at IMG Academy.
