SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Arizona men's golf battled Oklahoma State in a tightly contested matchup Monday at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, ultimately falling 3.5-1.5 at Salt Lake Country Club.
Despite the final score, the Wildcats remained competitive throughout the afternoon, with several individual matches staying close deep into the back nine. The matchup featured a number of hard-fought battles, with the outcome coming down to a handful of holes down the stretch.
Jorge Sampedro delivered a strong performance for Arizona, earning a convincing 4&2 victory over Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang to secure a full point for the Wildcats. Tianyi Xiong added another half point after battling Eric Lee to a tie in a match that went all 18 holes.
Matej Baca also found himself in a competitive match against Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson, while Taishi Moto and William Wistrand continued to fight into the closing holes of their respective matches. Moto's match against Preston Stout went the full 18 holes, with Stout ultimately winning 2 up. Wistrand pushed Gaven Lane to the 17th hole before falling 2&1.
Although Oklahoma State came away with the victory, the final team score didn't fully reflect how competitive the individual matches were. Arizona showed plenty of fight throughout the lineup, with several matches decided by narrow margins and momentum shifting over the course of the round.
The Wildcats will look to build on those competitive performances as they continue play at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament.
