Ferron Takes First; Men and Women Finish Second at ASU Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's and women's cross country teams competed in the ASU Cross Country Invitational earlier today at the Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The women competed in a three-mile race and the men competed in a four-mile race and both took second place. Kayla Ferron took first place in women's race by clocking a time of 17:46.47.
I'm really happy that we have people making good progress,” head cross country coach James Li said. “I'm happy that they are doing better, especially if you compare to the beginning of the year. I'm happy for Kayla (Ferron) to get a win, but I'm more proud of her progress. We have a few more days to go until Pac-12 Championships and if our kids can keep improving, we'll be okay. What a big differences two weeks makes.”
The men earned a total of 54 points, and Patrick Leary led all Wildcats with a 4th place finish and a time of 20:56.30.
Jeffrey Gautreau finished in 6th place with a time of 21:11.72, Matthew Beer finished in 12th place and clocked in at 21:36.62, Brendan Tinoco finished in 14th with a time of 21:57.27, Alex Hart finished in 18th place with a time of 22:10.89 and Daniom Tecle rounded it out for Arizona with a 20th place finish and a time of 22:26.37.
For the women, McKenna Gaffney came in fifth place with a time of 18:27.24, Kirsten Vergara finished in seventh with a time of 18:40.26, Taryn Estavillo finished 10th with a time of 19:16.14, Margie Moyer finished in 20th place with a time of 20:41.18 and Tiffany Riley finished in 21st place with a time of 21:28.97.
The University of Arizona men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next Friday for the Pac-12 Championships taking place in Colfax, Wash.
