ATHENS, Ga. -
Arizona sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) defeated the country's No. 10-ranked player, Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx on Wednesday at the NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga.
Smyth defeated Boxx, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to advance to the second round of the tournament.
“This was a great win for Lacey,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “She was a little nervous, but kept her emotions under control, especially when she got down 4-1 in the second. She battled hard, made smart adjustments and that's what got her back on top. Lacey has come such a long way with her game this year, I'm glad she got through this tough first round.”
During the regular season, Smyth defeated two players in the top 15, but went 0-2 against players ranked in the top 10.
On Thursday, she will face Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota for a chance to play in the round of 16.
