Aug. 13, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. – Twelve swimmers with ties to the University of Arizona will compete at the 11th Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif. August 18-22 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
Michael Alexandrov, Amanda Beard, Annie Chandler and Christine Magnuson will represent the United States. Jean Basson, Lyndon Ferns and Roland Schoeman comprise the South African Wildcat contingent while Chelsey Salli, Lindsay Seemann and Jake Tapp will represent Canada Swimming. Nicolas Nilo Oliveira and Masayuki Kishida will swim for Brazil and Japan, respectively.
USA Swimming is the host of the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships. It’s the first time the U.S. has hosted an international meet since Short Course World Championships in 2004 in Indianapolis. Tickets for the event are available via the USA Swimming website at www.usaswimming.org/PanPacs.
The Pan Pacific Swimming Championships are held under the oversight of the Pan Pacific Swimming Association. The Association was established in the mid 1980s and is made up of the four founding swimming federations – Swimming Australia, Swimming Canada, the Japan Amateur Swimming Federations and USA Swimming. These charter nations developed the concept of the swimming competition to provide their national teams with first class international competition between the two major international swimming competitions – the Olympic Games and the FINA World Championships.
The Americans with ties to Tucson have been in Irvine since last week for the U.S. Long Course National Championships. At the U.S. Trials, 14 swimmers for Ford Aquatics qualified for final heats as the club won the overall points total with 478.5.
A few South African swimmers, including Schoeman and Ferns, made a pit stop today in Tucson to see some old friends and get a quick swim in at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center before heading off to Irvine to compete at the Championships.
