Day One Prelims at NCAA's

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Kicking off day one of preliminary events of the NCAA’s in College Station, Texas, the Arizona 200 free relay team of Nicolas Nilo, Jordan Smith, Adam Small and Joel Greenshields broke the Arizona school record with a time of 1:16.22. The time broke Albert Subirats, Nilo, Adam Ritter and Darian Townsend’s time of 1:16.26 set in 2007 in Minneapolis. Arizona had the fifth fastest time among teams in the event today.
In the 500 freestyle, Jean Basson earned a bid into the championship heat tonight with a time of 4:13.75, good for third overall. Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or did not place into the top-16 in the 500 free after posting a 4:20.09.
Jack Brown qualified for the consolation heat in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:43.86, but Arizona’s other four swimmers in the event could not sniff out a spot in the top-16. Austen Thompson swam a personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.99, but he, Andrew Callahan, Nicolas Nilo and Bryan O’Connor could not advance.
Jordan Smith just missed Roland Schoeman’s school record in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 19.09, three hundredths of a second off the South African’s best mark. He qualified seventh overall for the championship heat. Adam Small and Jake Tapp did not make top-16 with times of 19.94 and 19.84 respectively. Smith’s time currently charts him in at third all-time on Arizona top 50 free list.
The Arizona 400 medley relay team of Jake Tapp, Marcus Titus, A.J. Tipton and Joel Greenshields swam a 3:05.65 and qualified fifth for tonight’s final heat.
Overall after day one, Arizona has two swimmers in championship heats and two participants in consolation finals. The Cats also qualified for both relays. Meanwhile, Texas has six in final heats and two in consols, Stanford has three in championship heats and six in consols, Auburn has three in championship heats and three in consols and Florida has four in championship finals and one in consols.
Ben Grado qualified for the consolation 1-meter event with a prelim score of 334.80. Consolation will now begin with finals to follow.
