Wildcats Return Seven for Day Two Finals

Minneapolis, Minn. ?- The No. 5 Arizona men’s swim team completed the second day of preliminary action this afternoon, qualifying seven athletes to compete in seven events for finals competition that will begin at 7 p.m. (CST) at the University Aquatic Center.

Junior Albert Subirats, junior Ivan Barnes, sophomore Nicolas Nilo and junior Darian Townsend finished second in the 200 medley relay to start off the meet, qualifying for the championship finals with a time of 1:24.90.

Freshman Jack Brown qualified for the consolation finals of the 400 IM with a time of 3:47.57, finishing 12th overall.

Subirats won the prelims of the 100 back, breaking his own school record with a time of 45.68. Subirats’ achievement marks the third broken school record of the meet, as it is also his second No. 1 performance on Arizona’s all-time list. In the100 fly, Subirats posted another first-place seed for tonight’s finals, while edging his own school record (45.06) with a time of 45.84.

The men dominated the 200 free, as four Wildcats qualified for the championship finals of the event. Nilo finished third overall with a personal best time of 1:34.21, while Townsend finished fourth (1:34.26), freshman Jean Basson finished sixth (1:34.59) and Ritter finished seventh (1:34.60).

In the 100 breast, Barnes finished seventh with a season best time of 53.10.
