20070315 Arizona Qualifies Nine for Day One Finals
Minneapolis , Minn. ?C The Arizona menˇ?s swim team completed the first day of preliminary action this afternoon at the 2007 NCAA Championships qualifying nine athletes to compete in tonightˇ?s finals competition that will begin at 7 p.m. (CST) at the University Aquatic Center. ? Starting todayˇ?s events was the 200 free relay team of sophomore Nicolas Nilo, junior Albert Subirats, junior Darian Townsend and freshman Jordan Smith, which finished third overall with a season best time of 1:16.91. ? In the 500 free, freshman Jean Basson finished third with a personal best time of 4:15.17. Senior Adam Ritter posted a third place seed in the 200 IM for tonightˇ?s finals, winning his heat with a time of 1:44.40, while Townsend finished 10th overall with a personal best time of 1:45.40. ? In the 50 free, Stanfordˇ?s Ben Wildman-Tobriner set a new American record, breaking the 19 second mark with a time of 18.98, posting a second-place seed overall for the Cardinal. Subirats finished eighth in the event with a time of 19.37. ? The 400 medley relay team of freshman Jake Tapp, junior Ivan Barnes, Nilo and freshman Joel Greenshields wrapped up todayˇ?s prelims by finishing fifth with a time of 3:10.06. ? ?
