Wildcats Travel to Southern California for first Pac-10 Competition
This Week in the Pool ?- The fourth-ranked Arizona women’s and fifth-ranked men’s swimming and diving teams are set to travel to Los Angeles, Calif. this weekend to take on Pac-10 rivals USC and UCLA (women only). Competition will begin Friday, Nov. 10 against the Trojans at 1 p.m. (PST) at McDonalds Swim Stadium and on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. against the Bruins.

Starting the action for the women’s side was the 200 medley relay team of freshmen Caitlin Iversen, Annie Chandler, sophomore Lara Jackson and sophomore Lindsey Kelly who won in a time of 1:42.73. Kelly also won the 50 free with a time of 23.86, while classmate Taylor Baughman tied for second-place with a time of 23.89.
Junior Lacey Nymeyer posted three individual wins against the Badgers, tallying 27 points for the Wildcats. Beginning with the 100 free, Nymeyer won with a time of 51.03, while sophomore Anna Turner finished second (51.59) and Kelly finished third (51.95). Nymeyer dominated the 200 free as well, finishing with a time of 1:49.31 and later took first in the 500 free (4:53.88).
Four freshmen made their debuts as Wildcats as Iversen finished first in both the 100 (56.32) and 200 back (2:00.84), Joni Zimmerman finished second in the 1000 free (10:04.74) and
In the 200 breast, junior Jacquelyn Craft finished second with a time of 2:17.42 and
In the diving well for the women, senior Megan MacDonald won the 3-meter competition with 276 points and finished second in the 1-meter (246.14). Senior Holly Kast finished third in the 1-meter (245.24) and junior Shayna Keel took third in the 3-meter (202.73).
For the men’s squad, the 200 medley relay team of junior transfer Darian Townsend, junior Ivan Barnes, junior Albert Subirats and sophomore Nicolas Nilo won with a time of 1:30.40. Subirats also won the 50 free with a time of 20.91, while freshman Jordan Smith finished second (21.30).
Three Wildcats dominated the 100 free as senior Adam Ritter finished first (44.83), Townsend finished second (44.97) and Nilo third (45.58). U of A also took over the 200 free beginning with Ritter, who finished first (1:38.67), Nilo second (1:39.80) and freshman Joel Greenshields third (1:40.76).
Junior Matt Biel posted two individual victories, first in both the 1000 free (9:30.71) and in the 500 free (4:35.61). Freshman Jean Basson finished third in the 500 free (4:38.91), while sophomore David Pursley finished second in the 1000 free (9:35.47).
Townsend finished first in the 100 back, posting his first individual win as a Wildcat (50.65), while freshman Scott Jackson finished third (52.06). In the 200 back, freshman Jake Tapp finished third with a time of 1:52.14, while sophomore Josh Arreguin finished second in the 100 breast (57.83) and junior Darren Maxwell finished third in the 200 fly (1:53.30).
Subirats and Townsend swam exhibition heats of the 100 fly, along with freshman Jack Brown and Ritter, who swam exhibition heats of the 400 IM, all posted times that were good enough to take first and second place in their respective races.
On the diving side, junior Matt Bisordi won both springboard events, scoring 278.24 points in the 1-meter and 358.05 points in the 3-meter. Junior Craig Sheedy finished third in the 1-meter with a total of 243.82 points respectively.
