Swim and Dive Travel to Austin for Annual Texas Invitational

This Week in the Pool ?- The No. 2 Arizona women’s and the No. 6 men’s swimming teams will travel to Austin, Texas on Thursday, Nov. 30- Saturday, Dec. 2 to compete in the annual Texas Invitational. Preliminary action will begin at 10 a.m. (CST) each morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center and finals will start at 6 p.m.

Arizona in the Rankings ?- The Wildcat women currently post a 3-0 (2-0 Pac-10) record, raising them to the No. 2 position in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll released on November 16. The men (2-1, 0-1 Pac-10), dropped only one spot in the poll to No. 6 after falling to No. 5 USC on Nov. 11.

A Look at the Opponents?- The Wildcats will compete against some of the nation’s highest-ranking teams in their quest to qualify as many athletes as they can for the 2007 NCAA Championships. Some of the teams in attendance include Texas, whose men are undefeated and currently ranked second, and the women, who are ranked 11th. The No. 1 Stanford women and No.3 men will be competing as well along with the sixth-ranked Florida women and 10th-ranked men. Intrastate rival ASU will also attend the meet as well as the No. 14 UCLA women’s squad.

What Happened Last Year ?- The Wildcats have been competing at the Texas Invitational every year since 1991. Last year, both teams completed the meet finishing first, posting the first Arizona dual-victory at the meet in school history.

The women tallied 724 team points, which dropped Texas to second-place (652 points), while the men posted a score of 623 to down the Texas men by four points, after trailing the Longhorns by 32 points entering the last night of competition.

Arizona’s Last time in the Water ?- The Wildcats traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. On Nov. 10 and 11 to take on Pac-10 rivals USC and UCLA for the first conference dual-meets of the season. On Friday, the women’s team defeated the No. 7 Trojans 128-57, while the men’s team trailed USC after the first day of competition. On Saturday, the women defeated the 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins posting 11 victories to down UCLA 170-127.

The men’s squad completed dual-meet action against USC on Saturday as well, posting its first loss of the season, falling to the Trojans 75-65.

Arizona’s Next Action - The swimming and diving teams will continue dual-meet competition at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center when they return from winter break on Jan. 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. (MST) as the women take on Northern Arizona and Oregon State, while the men only compete against California and Michigan.
