A former standout swimmer at the DeMont, a four-year All-American, began his collegiate swimming career at the DeMont is a former world record holder in the 1500m freestyle (1972), the 400m free (1973) and the 4x100 free relay (1977). In the late 1980s, DeMont was inducted into the World Swimming Hall of Fame.
