Arizona Swimmers Win Eight Medals at 2004 Olympic Games
Total includes four gold medals
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona swimmers definitely left their mark at the recently completed 2004 Olympic swimming competition in Maroussi, Greece.
Current or former Wildcats claimed a total of eight medals, including four gold medals, in the swimming events, which were held Aug. 14-21 at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. Their collective efforts included one world record (Men’s 400-meter Freestyle Relay/3:13.17), one Olympic record (Women's 200-meter Breaststroke/2:23.37) and American record (Women’s 200-meter Individual Medley/2:11.70).
When compared to the rest of the world, Arizona’s eight medals won at the 2004 Athens Olympics left the Wildcats tied with Japan for third place in the final medal count. Here is a look at the swimming medals table as supplied by FINA.

Other UA Olympic swim notes included:
- Roland Schoeman's leadoff leg of 48.17 on Aug. 15 in the 400m Freestyle Relay equaled the second-fastest time ever for the 100m Freestyle.
- Current UA junior Simon Burnett (Great Britain) set a British record of 1:47.72 on Aug. 15 in the semifinal of the 200m Freestyle. He placed seventh in the Olympic final a day later.
- Amanda Beard succeeds Amy VanDyken (6 gold medals in 1996 & 2000) as the UA athlete with the most career Olympic medals with seven (3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze).
