Wildcats in Second after Day Two at Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas- The Arizona men’s and women’s swim team completed their second day of competition at the Texas Invitational with both teams in second place. The men have a total of 447 points and the women have 452.5 points. Junior Simon Burnett also broke a 17-year old U.S. Open record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:32.22, which is also a new NCAA record.

The men’s 200y medley relay team of freshmen Nick Thoman, Ivan Barnes, Albert Subirats, and Burnett won with a time of 1:27.51. In the finals of the 200y freestyle, junior Lyndon Ferns placed first (1:34.63) and junior Tyler DeBerry was second (1:35.06). Burnett won the consolation finals placing ninth overall.

The Wildcats took the top-three spots in the 100y breaststroke as junior Dave Rollins and Barnes tied for first (54.18) and senior Nate Stevens finished third (54.37). Thoman placed third in the 100y backstroke as well (48.11).

For the women, sophomore Emily Strouse won the 400y individual medley in a time of 4:15.50. In the 200y freestyle, senior Emily Mason finished first (1:46.26), freshman Lacey Nymeyer was third (1:47.22) and senior Jessica Hayes finished fifth (1:47.58).

Junior Erin Sieper finished second in the 100y breaststroke (1:01.16) and junior Jenna Gresdal finished second in the 100y backstroke as well (53.75).

Arizona will complete the 2004 Texas Invitational Saturday in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m. (CST).
