Arizona Women's Golf in First Place at Wildcat Invitational After Round One
TUCSON, Ariz. - For the fourth time in six scoring tournaments this season, the Arizona women's golf team shot the low round on the opening day of a tournament to assume first place.
Arizona, ranked No. 2 in the latest edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, is in first place of the Wildcat Invitational being held at the Raven Golf Club at Sabino Springs after shooting a first round of 293 (+5). The top-ranked Duke Blue Devils wrapped up the day in second place and trail the host Wildcats by one stroke.
Individually, Blue Devil freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn set the pace with a first round total of two-under-par 70. Arizona freshmen Lorena Ochoa and Natalie Gulbis completed the opening round by carding rounds of 72, even par, and are tied for third place with four other golfers.
Two other Pac-10 squads finished round one in the top-5. No. 4-ranked Southern California fired an opening round of 295 (+7), good for third place, and fifth-ranked Stanford shot a team total of 298 (+10) to wrap up round one in fourth place. No. 12 New Mexico State rounds out the top five with an opening round score of 302 (+14)
Arizona sophomore Anne Lee wrapped up today's action tied for ninth place after carding a one-over 73. Also scoring for the Wildcats was junior Cristina Baena who currently stands tied for 20th place with a total of 76 (+4).
Play continues tomorrow and Wednesday at the Raven Golf Club at Sabino Springs with an 8 a.m. shotgun start both days.
