Women In Seventh Place After First Round

TULSA, Okla. (May 19) - The Arizona women's golf team shot a opening round of 21-over par 305 today and is tied with USC for seventh after the first day of 1999 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, which are being held at the Tulsa Country Club (Par-71, 6,022 yards). On the strength of having four golfers among the top-six, Duke is in first place by 12 strokes after recording a 4-over-par 288. Although the Cats trail the Blue Devils by 17 shots, they are only five shots out of second place.

Duke owns the lead over second place Arizona State, who shot a 16-over-par 300. A tightly-bunched group follows the Sun Devils, as Georgia is in third at 17-over 301, Pepperdine is fourth at 302, Louisiana State is fifth with at 303 and Stanford is sixth with a 304.

Individually, Arizona State's Grace Park has the lead by two strokes after shooting a 2-under par 69 today. The only golfer to shoot a sub-par round, she leads Duke's Candy Hanneman and Pepperdine's Tamie Durdin, who are tied with second at even-par 71.

Arizona's top three golfers after round, Jenna Daniels, Krissie Register and Christina Monteiro, are involved in a 16-way tie for 24th after opening play with 5-over-par 76 totals. The next Arizona golfer on the scoreboard is Jill Gomric, who is in an eight-way tie for 40th with a 6-over-par 77. The final Arizona golfer is Christina Baena, who is one of 10 golfers tied for 56th at 8-over-par 79.
