MALIBU, Calif. – Arizona Soccer closed out nonconference play Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to Pepperdine at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
The Wildcats (3-4-1) increased their attacking pressure after halftime, generating six of their eight shots in the second half and earning 10 corner kicks throughout the match, but were unable to break through against the Waves. Arizona finished with four shots on goal while Pepperdine recorded 12 total shots and five on frame.
Pepperdine struck early as Julia Quinonez put the Waves ahead in the third minute off an assist from Alex Pendleton.
Arizona had an opportunity to answer in the 11th minute after drawing a penalty, but Jessica Bedolla's attempt was saved by Pepperdine goalkeeper Ava Hartstein.
The Waves extended their advantage in the 30th minute. Sofia Cortes-Browne initially denied Kate Ryan's attempt before Quinonez scored her second of the afternoon seconds later to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Arizona came out of the break with increased pressure after being limited to two shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Wildcats tripled that output with six second-half attempts and earned six of their 10 corners after halftime.
Emerson Stoft put Arizona's first second-half opportunity on frame in the 53rd minute before Mireya Stephenson, Aranda Hurge, Amiya Warner and Leilani Cortez-Ramirez each generated attempts during a stretch of sustained pressure. Hurge forced a save in the 71st minute, while Stephenson put Arizona's final opportunity on goal in the 90th.
Laurynn Ziller played the final 45 minutes in goal and kept Pepperdine scoreless after the break, making two saves.
Arizona finished with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks and held 51% of the possession.
