Arizona Beats Stanford for the First Time in 16 Years

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats (7-4-0, 2-4-0) pulled a 2-1 victory over the reigning National Champions for the first time in 16 years and 14 matches. After Stanford came out with a quick goal in the 13th minute the Cats responded with one of their own 19 minutes later. Aguilera's sixth brace of her career, and second of the season, sealed the deal in the second half, tipping the scales in favor of Arizona.

Arizona saw stellar offensive performances from forwards Jill Aguilera and Jada Talley and stellar defensive performances from freshmen Jasmine Young, Ava Hetzel and Jordan Hall who kept the Cardinal from increasing the scoring total. The Cats ended the match in line with Stanford going 16-18 in shots, 8-8 in SOG, and 7-6 in corners. Keeper Hope Hisey managed to add seven saves to her growing total aiding in keeping Stanford at one goal.

Players of the match - Double Trouble
Jill Aguilera and Jada Talley turned on the heat against Stanford with Aguilera earning a brace and Talley earning double assists. With two seemingly identical, an incredible, goals the pair was able to clinch the Arizona victory for the first time since '05. A perfectly placed cross in the 32nd minute allowed Aguilera to swiftly sink the ball into the back of the net to equalize the match against the Cardinal.

Play of the match - Game Winner
With the game still tied in the middle of the second Aguilera and Talley didnt hesitate to find a way to push Arizona over the edge. Another perfectly placed cross from Talley found its way to Aguilera, this time with the forward having to fight around a Stanford defender. With ease, Aguilera was able to shake the Cardinal and score the game-winning goal.

14 - The Arizona Wildcats have beat the Stanford Cardinals for the first time since '05. This marks 16 years, and 14 losses, since their last victory.

1 - This is Tony Amato's first victory over the Cardinal as Head Coach of the Wildcats.

6 - Tonight's brace from Aguilera marks the sixth of her career and second of the season. Her last brace in the 2019 season came against Stanford where she ended their eight-game shutout streak and made Arizona the second Pac-12 opponent to score two on the Cardinal.

"It feels good to have a good performance against a good team, and have the victory. We have had some results this year where we thought we played well and didnt get the result. We had some tight games, especially on the road, 1-nil games that we thought could have gone our way. So to put it all together tonight feels really good. We really wanted to have a great victory tonight and have a great performance and, especially in the second half, I thought we did that."
