TUCSON, Ariz. — C.A.T.S. Academics announced that Sirena Linton (Gymnastics), Hope Hisey (Soccer), Nick Lagaev (Men's Tennis), and Brooks Fail (Men's Swimming & Diving) have been selected as the first Student Athletes of the Month in the New Year.
These students were recognized for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth. They were chosen as Student Athletes of the Month by the C.A.T.S. Academic staff.
Linton is a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz. who is pursuing a degree in Nutritional Science. In her first season at the U of A she recorded season highs on both the Uneven Bars (9.850) and Balance Beam (9.900). Before Arizona she was a 2-time National Qualifier and a Western National Qualifier.
"Sirena is a very determined and focused student-athlete," counselor Sarah Barber said. "She always reaches out for help when she needs it and takes advantages of all opportunities so that she can find success in the classroom. Sirena has a very bright future."
Hisey is a Sophomore goalkeeper from Tucson, Ariz., majoring in Political Science. In the 2019 season Hisey played in 17 matches, including every Pac-12 and NCAA Tournament match. She recorded a save average of .703% and aided in seven shutouts. Additionally, she was named Pac-12 All-Conference All-Freshman honor.
"Hope is a phenomenal student," learning specialist Mary Hartman said. "She is a self-motivated learner and has excellent time management skills. Her determination to stay on top of her studies, and ahead on assignments has allowed her to maintain a very strong GPA. Hope's focus, determination, and discipline showed both in the classroom and on the soccer field."
Lagaev is a sophomore from Vaughn, Ontario, Canada who is pursuing a degree in Nutritional Science. In his first season at Arizona, Lagaev tied in total single wins and in dual matches, going 19-10 with 10 dual wins and 12 doubles wins. Prior to Arizona he was the No. 2 prospect coming out of Canada.
"Nick took on a very challenging and demanding course load in the fall with Organic Chemistry and other Nutrition courses," counselor Courtney Merkle said. "With this challenging semester he came out with an outstanding GPA to finish."
Fail is a senior and a Tucson native who is majoring in Literacy, Learning, and Leadership. He holds two all-time top-ten times in Arizona school history (500 free - 9th, 1650 free - 6th), earned All-American Honorable Mention in the 800 free relay (2018), and CSCAA Scholar All-American (2018). In the 2018-19 season he held the fastest team times for the season in the 500, 1000, and 1,650 free.
"Brooks has been an outstanding student and role model during his time here at the U of A," counselor Corey Talley said. "He has experience tremendous success in the pool while taking care of business in the classroom. Brooks is truly a model student athlete for our department."
