TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team ended play at the Western Intercollegiate tournament in Santa Cruz, California today, netting eighth place in the team competition. The Wildcats were led by senior golfer Alex McMahon, who carded 68-71-73=212 (+2) over the course of the tournament to earn a share of 12th place overall. This is McMahon's best finish in the last five tournaments he has played in.
“This tournament is similar to our conference tournament in a lot of ways so it's good that we were here,” noted McMahon. “I made a triple bogey on the 18th hole today but other than that I played well. Overall I feel good about what we did this week. I am looking forward to the PAC-12s."
Freshmen George Cunningham had a strong final round with a 75-73-68=216 (+6), earning himself a tie for 20th place. Freshmen Peter Koo and Max Donohue both notched a 75 (+5) in the final round today, taking a share of 20th and 86th place respectively. Koo had 69-72-75=216 (+6) and Donohue had 85-79-75=239 (+29) over the course of this weekends play. Sophomore Jake Kreuz took home a 75-73-73=221 (+11) after today, and he claimed a tie on 40th place. Senior Brenden Redfern carded a 78-80-84=242 (+32) after the final round, and took a tie for 89th place.
“We had a very good week,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “This is the top field we play all year in fast and challenging conditions. Even more encouraging is that we played 6 count 5 and we showed we look to be building depth. This week we can take a lot of positives because we played like a team, showed lots of heart and fight, and saw a good course to prepare for PAC-12 Championships. Seeing Alex step up as he gets close to the end of his college career was great. Peter really broke out too and we are needing to play our best now to be prepared for The Palouse.”
The Wildcats will be at Washington State next for the PAC-12 Championships.
