TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona's men's golf team finished the first day of the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Monday in a tie for eighth place at 21 over par. The Wildcats were led by freshman George Cunningham, who managed a 141 (-3) after 36 holes. Cunningham notched five birdies during the first round of play, and one birdie during the second, ultimately giving him a share of fourth place heading into the final round on Tuesday.
"Today brought out mixed emotions for our team," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We are getting outstanding production from our top players. George posted his fifth consecutive subpar round and seven of his last eight. That is what we need to be great."
Redshirt freshman Jake Kreuz carded a one-over 145 at the culmination of today's play, after posting a 71 (-1) after one round. He holds a share of 18th place. Senior Alex McMahon finished at 10 over par on the day and is currently tied for 57th place.
"Jake has also really filled a void in our lineup with a great outing today," Anderson added. "We need better production in the back of our lineup. We have four freshmen playing and we know we will learn from mistakes."
Freshman Peter Koo posted a pair of 80s and is tied for 77th place at 16 over. Fellow freshman Max Donohue closed out the first round with a 77 (+5), but an 84 (+12) in the second round left him in a tie for 80th at 17 over.
"This course is challenging around the greens and very penalizing when you are on the wrong side of the hole," Anderson stated. "We counted too many big numbers and didn't finish as strong as we need. That said, we will keep working with this group and we will benefit from the experience today. Tomorrow is a new day and our guys will be more comfortable committing to their targets and making free swings."
The final round of play will tee off at 8 a.m. MST on Tuesday. Live scoring of the tournament is provided by GolfStatResults.com.
