Cunningham Places Second at NTO Collegiate Showcase

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer George Cunningham placed second in the Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase (NTO) on Monday, Feb. 16 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.. Cunningham played alongside former Wildcat Jim Furyk, Arizona Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, and Wildcat Club member and Bon Voyage Travel owner Peter Evans.
“I thought today was good. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot playing with Mr. Furyk,” reflected Cunningham. “It was a good view of what I need to get better on in the future with playing with him and also playing the course in PGA tour setup. It was a laid back kind of tournament and still competitive so I couldn't have asked for much more.”
In the individual competition, Cunningham carded a one-over 72. He tallied 15 pars, two bogeys and a birdie on 16. In the team competition, Jim Furyk, Greg Byrne and Peter Evans played a one round, best ball format. They posted a 66, which was tied for 11th place. Par for both competitions was 71.
“Pairing George and Jim together was great because they fed off each other,” head men's golf coach Jim Anderson said. “I know George was happy to have a chance to learn from an all-time great in our game and Jim seemed overall impressed by George's game. The team had a good time and we were very proud of the way George competed while representing the current team. Having a chance to play for a spot in a PGA Tour event doesn't happen very often and George certainly made the most of the experience.”
"I had a lot of fun and was glad to help Arizona be represented in the first event along with Greg, Peter and George," Furyk noted. "I am really proud of and happy for George in the way he handled himself. He played a very good round of golf."
"I really enjoyed our group at the beautiful Riviera Country Club," Byrne added. "Jim Furyk is one of the greatest Wildcats of all time and a first-class representative of our program. I appreciated the opporutnity to spend time with George Cunningham and his family. To watch him shoot one over par on one of our nation's toughest courses without ever playing there before shows you the potential he has for a very bright future. Peter Evans is a great supporter and it's always great to spend time with him. This was a really special day."
