"I'm really proud of our girls," head coach Laura Ianello said. "They're organized, the course management, the preparation for this tournament has been thorough. Margarita Ramos came out with a strong round today and shot one under. Manon Gidali, in the first college round of her career, came out blazing and shot a 67. As a team, we're looking to improve each day. We only have a four-shot lead over UCLA and we look to make that bigger each day."
No. 22 Arizona shot a 285 (-3) to finish in first, No. 1 UCLA is in second place with a 289 (+1) and No. 8 Arizona State rounds out the top three with a carding of 291 (+3). Individually, Gidali holds a round-one score of 67 to lead the field of 79 players.
Gidali, who joined the team in January and is playing in her first collegiate tournament, fired a five-under round of 67 to take the lead. She shot five birdies on the day. Senior Margarita Ramos earned a top-10 finish in a three-way tie for fourth. She shot a round of 71 (-1).
"I was really nervous coming into this tournament because it was my first," Gidali said. "Once we started playing, I felt better. I know the course pretty well because we've been practicing a lot. So I'm feeling good after this first round. I'm trying to do my best and improve each round."
Senior Nikki Koller sits in a four-way tie for ninth with her round of 73 (+1). Sophomore Haley Andreas and senior Isabelle Boineau are in a 12-way tie for 13th with their rounds of 74 (+2).
Playing as individuals, freshman Andrea Vilarasau shares the four-way tie for ninth (73, +1), junior Clemence Abrahamian is in nine-way tie for 38th (77 (+5), freshman Paige Spiranac is in a three-way tie for 73rd (86 (+14) and junior Kyndall Ardoin sits in 76th place (89 (+17).
