TUCSON, Ariz. - A balanced attack gave San Diego State the first-round lead Thursday at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Arizona Regional in Tucson, Ariz.
The second-seeded Aztecs placed four golfers at par or better to post a six-under 278 team tally and lead the 14-team field by one stroke. Colin Featherstone and Alex Kang carded 68s (-3), while Johan Carlsson and Todd Baek notched even-par 71s to help SDSU equal its second-best opening-round score of the season in relation to par.
"Overall it was a solid first round," said SDSU head coach Ryan Donovan. "We were patient. That is our strategy, and I'm proud of our guys. We won the (Mountain West) conference (championship) here a couple weeks ago, so the guys know what to expect out here."
Washington stands in second place, one stroke back, while Liberty (280/-4), host Arizona (281/-3) and Texas A&M (281/-3) round out the top five places.
UC Davis' Matt Hansen is atop the field of 75 with a first-round 64 (-7). The Los Osos, Calif., native carded eight birdies on the day en route to his career-low round, an effort that saw him hole out a bunker shot to open the round and chip in from 30 yards out on the back nine.
"This golf course really fits my eye," said Hansen after the round. "I feel very comfortable out there."
Senior Tarquin MacManus led the way for Arizona, as he carded a four-under 67 to help the Wildcats post its best first-round tally of the season. MacManus, who has a win and a tie for fifth place to his credit in three previous NCAA regional starts, sits in a tie for third place individually. He was the only UA player under par through the first 18 holes.
Teammates Juan Pablo Hernandez and Jonathan Khan currently are tied for 18th place at even-par 71. The duo also managed to record an eagle during the round. Hernandez registered a three on the par-5 10th hole, while Khan posted a deuce on the par-4 11th hole, their first and second holes of the day, respectively.
Erik Oja is in a tie for 30th place at one-over 71, while Stefan Cox is tied for 59th place at five-over 76, to round out the UA contingent.
The 54-hole 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Arizona Regional continues through Saturday at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort, a par-71, 7,199-yard layout. The top five teams and one individual advance to the 114th NCAA Championships, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
