TUCSON, Ariz.- After one round in the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle, Arizona is in eighth place due to its 362 (+2) first round.
Tarquin MacManus and Jonathan Khan each shot rounds of 71 (-1). The two are tied for 22nd and are four strokes off the lead. UCLA's Pedro Figueiredo and Augusta State's Taylor Floyd share the lead at four under. Duke leads the tournament at 10 under.
Though Arizona is in eighth out of 14 teams, the Cats sit just 12 back on the crowded leader board; no more than 2 strokes separate the top seven teams. MacManus and Khan each did his own part with rounds under par, but the other four golfers will be needed to break into this upper tier of the event.
The other four are: John Kostis and Rich Saferian at (+1), Philip Bagdade at (+2) and Tom Conran at (+6). The five counted scores on day one were all good enough for top 50 places.
The Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle will resume with one round tomorrow, Nov. 10, and one round Wednesday. The event is hosted at the CordeValle Resort, a par-72, 7,169-yard course.
